Not all tree hazards are obvious. A tree may look healthy from the outside, but inside, it could be rotting, cracked, or structurally unstable. That’s where a Tree Risk Assessment (TRA) comes in.

Pruning is one of the most effective ways to promote healthy, safe, and beautiful trees—but only when it’s done at the right time. Here in Mid-Missouri, the timing of your pruning makes a big difference based on tree species, weather patterns, and pest cycles.

Sometimes it’s obvious. A tree is leaning dangerously or has clearly split. But in many cases, it’s more subtle—and waiting too long to take action can lead to serious property damage, safety hazards, or even insurance issues.

Species-Specific Pruning

Is there a perfect time to prune your trees?

While there’s no wrong time to prune a tree, some seasons are better than others. Fall is useful for inspections since trees are going dormant, but pruning during this time can slow healing and leave wounds more vulnerable.

The best time to prune live limbs is late winter to early spring, just before new growth begins. This allows cuts to heal quickly as the tree enters its growing phase, encouraging strong, healthy development and improving the tree’s overall appearance.

Stump Grinding vs Stump Removal

Is there a difference?

Yes. Stump removal extracts the entire stump, including the underground root ball of the tree. While this process of stump removal can be challenging, time-consuming, and often more expensive, it will also result in a more comprehensive solution.

Stump grinding leaves the roots in the ground. The stump and surface roots are ground down until it is below the soil. The grinding process yields small pieces of stump, which can be used as ground cover or mulch. Most of the time, stump grinding is sufficient and can get the job done.

Common Tree Pests

What tree pests are in Missouri?

The Emerald Ash Borer is one of the latest invasive insects in Missouri, rapidly spreading across the nation. This pest targets ash trees, prized for their beauty and durability, which provide shade and support the local ecosystem.

Invasive pests, such as the Asian Longhorn Beetle and the Gypsy Moth, threaten local flora. To curb their spread and protect trees, do not remove wood from infected trees on your property. Such precautions are vital for preserving Missouri’s natural landscape and minimizing further infestations.

Tree Services At All Times

What Are Common Problems With Trees?

Trees are especially vulnerable during storms with ice, snow, or high winds, which can lead to broken limbs or uprooting. Timely pruning and proper nutrition can greatly improve a tree’s ability to withstand these conditions.

Improper planting is another major issue—trees planted too deep may struggle to access oxygen. For healthy growth, plant trees in a hole wider than the container and about an inch shallower than the root ball to support strong, oxygen-rich root development.

How Close Is Too Close to a Power Line?

Is your tree growing into the danger zone?

Indeed. Trees situated within 10 feet of overhead power lines—or with branches extending above them—present a significant hazard. In stormy weather, strong winds or snow can cause limbs to break and fall onto the lines, potentially resulting in outages, fires, or even more severe consequences.

Our team employs the right equipment and coordinated techniques to safely trim or remove trees in proximity to utilities. Avoid the risk—clearing lines is not a task for do-it-yourself efforts.
